A Different Kind of Fresh StartNot every fresh start begins on January 1.
Sometimes it begins when you realize you are ready to care for yourself in a new way. For me, that moment comes around my birthday. It feels more personal. More meaningful. More natural. Less about pressure. More about alignment. Less about becoming someone else. More about returning to yourself. And maybe that is where you are too. If you have been feeling emotionally drained, overstretched, or like everyone else’s needs have taken priority over your own, this space was made for you. When “Fine” Is Covering Up a LotSo many moms keep moving even when they are running on empty. You take care of the house. You manage the schedules. You keep up with the details. You hold emotional space for everyone else. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, your own inner world gets overlooked. What looks like “I’m just tired” can actually be stress, frustration, sadness, loneliness, resentment, or overwhelm. Not because you are failing. Because you are carrying a lot. And often, you are carrying it quietly. Start by Naming What You FeelThe Feelings Wheel for Moms was created to help you better understand what is really going on beneath the surface. Sometimes the hardest part is not feeling the emotion. It is finding the words for it. When you can identify what you are experiencing, you create space for more self-understanding, more self-compassion, and more thoughtful responses. The Feelings Wheel is a gentle first step. When Self-Help Books Aren’t Enough
For a long time, I loved self-help books. They helped me understand things about human behavior, habits, and emotional patterns that I had never thought about before. Many of them gave me language for experiences I couldn’t quite explain yet. But over time I noticed something. Even though I was learning a lot, my life didn’t always feel very different. That’s when I realized something important: learning about change and practicing change are two very different things. Most of us already know quite a bit about what would help us feel better. We know we should rest more, ask for help, set boundaries, and take better care of ourselves. But actually, doing those things in real life can feel complicated especially in the middle of busy family life. That’s why Feelings Fitness was created. Not to offer more advice, but to create supportive spaces where moms can slow down, understand what they’re feeling, and practice small shifts that make everyday life a little lighter. Growth rarely happens from information alone. It happens through awareness, compassion, and practice. If you’re looking for a simple place to start, you can download the Feelings Wheel for Moms. It’s a gentle tool designed to help you better understand your emotional world--without judgment and without pressure to “fix” anything. Because sometimes the most powerful step forward is simply learning how to listen to yourself.
"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves"
-Viktor Frankl May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so it seems quite appropriate to discuss the concept of an "existential crisis." As we honor the importance of our Mental Health, I want to share some ways we can move through existential questioning and come back home to ourselves: 1. Yoga and Grounding Practice When your identity feels like it's floating, yoga brings you back into your body. Even just 10 minutes of gentle movement can anchor your nervous system and quiet racing thoughts. 2. Mindfulness in Everyday Moments Existential crises often pull us into the vastness of "what if.: Mindfulness invites us back to the "right now." Try noticing your breathe while washing dishes or listening fully during a child's story. 3. Meditation as a Compass Sitting with your crisis in stillness may feel overwhelming- but in that quiet space, you may begin to hear your soul whisper back. Even guided meditations focused on healing and purpose can be powerful allies. 4. Give Yourself Permission to Rebuild You are allowed to question everything. You are allowed to fall apart. And you are allowed to rebuild slowly - with intention, love, and support. If this speaks to you, know you're not alone. This community was built for connection, support, and transformation. Whether you're grieving, growing, or both - you belong here.
Grief holds a strange power over time. It expands, contracts, and weaves itself into celebrations meant for joy – particularly on days like Mother's Day. For those of us navigating motherhood after losing our own mothers, the day arrives with a complex emotional landscape that few openly discuss.
To anyone walking this complex path of mothering through grief, please know you're doing something sacred. You're living proof that love continues, even through the tears. Your grief is welcome here. Consider this your permission slip to honor both realities – to miss your mom deeply while loving yourself fiercely. Share this episode with someone who might need to hear they aren't alone in navigating this tender territory.
Navigating the tender complexities of Mother's Day after loss is a journey that many of us may face at some point in our lives. It is a time that can bring forth a flood of emotions ranging from profound sadness to a warm reminiscence of cherished memories. In this episode of the podcast, we delve into the personal experiences of dealing with Mother's Day without a beloved mother and explore the ways in which we can find solace, honor our emotions, and cultivate emotional resilience.
The act of honoring our emotions is pivotal to our healing process. It's important to recognize that feelings of loss and love can coexist and that acknowledging them is the first step towards emotional wellness. During the podcast, I share a grounding exercise to help listeners stabilize their emotions and prepare them for the reflections ahead. By engaging in such practices, we learn to manage our responses to triggers, especially during significant dates like Mother's Day. The healing power of writing is also a central theme in this episode. Writing can serve as a cathartic outlet for our pain and can help us articulate thoughts and feelings that might otherwise be difficult to express. A deeply personal letter to my late mother, shared during the podcast, illustrates this therapeutic potential and encourages listeners to use writing as a tool for managing their grief. Furthermore, the concept of 'feelings fitness'—a term used to describe the ability to manage and tolerate our emotions as well as those of others—is introduced. Just like physical fitness, emotional fitness is an essential component of our overall wellbeing. By exercising our emotions through practices like writing, speaking, or creative outlets, we become more adept at navigating the complexities of our inner landscape. Self-care, particularly during times of mourning, is also emphasized in the podcast. It is important to create a space for self-reflection and to engage in activities that nurture our souls. Whether it's taking a quiet walk, indulging in a favorite hobby, or simply taking the time to breathe deeply and intentionally, self-care is a non-negotiable aspect of emotional recovery. The episode touches on the notion of transforming grief into strength. Remembering the positive attributes and the love shared with a mother can serve as a powerful foundation for resilience. The stories we hold and the memories we cherish can become a source of comfort and motivation, helping us to carry forward the legacy of those we've lost. Lastly, the importance of holding space for our own emotions and those of others is a crucial takeaway from this episode. Life's poignant milestones, such as Mother's Day, can be challenging for many, and offering support and understanding to ourselves and to those around us fosters a sense of community and shared healing. In conclusion, this podcast episode serves as a guide for those navigating the emotional terrain of loss, particularly around Mother's Day. It provides listeners with strategies for emotional fitness, the power of writing for healing, the significance of self-care, and the strength that can be found in memories. Every listener's story of loss and healing is honored, and through sharing and reflection, we can all find a path towards emotional growth and resilience. |
